Xero Practice Manager
slow or won't load?

Xero Practice Manager (XPM) is crawling, timing out, showing half a page or just spinning. Before you blame the software, most of these problems live in the browser or the connection. Work through the list and you'll usually have it back to full speed in minutes.

Quick answer

Try Xero Practice Manager (XPM) in a private/incognito window first — if it's fast there, the problem is your cache or an extension. Clear your browser cache, make sure you're on the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, check your internet, and sign out and back in. If it's slow for everyone at once, check the Xero status page.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Usually the browser, not XPM.

Xero Practice Manager runs entirely in your web browser, so its speed depends on the browser being current, uncluttered and pointed at a healthy connection. Over time a browser builds up cached data that can go stale, extensions (ad-blockers, password tools, PDF add-ins) can interfere with pages, and an unsupported or out-of-date browser struggles with modern web apps. Add a patchy internet connection or an occasional Xero-side service issue, and XPM feels slow or won't load. The steps below rule these out one at a time.

THE FIX

Work through these in order.

  1. Try a private/incognito windowOpen XPM in a private/incognito window and sign in. If it's noticeably faster, the problem is cached data or an extension in your normal browser — the next two steps sort that.
  2. Clear your browser cache and cookiesClear cached images, files and cookies (for the last day or so is usually enough), then close and reopen the browser and sign back into XPM. This is the single most effective fix for a sluggish page.
  3. Update to a supported browserXero and XPM are built for the latest versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Check for a browser update and install it — an old or unsupported browser is a common cause of pages loading slowly or incorrectly.
  4. Disable interfering extensionsIf incognito was faster, turn off extensions one by one in your normal browser — ad-blockers, PDF tools and some security add-ons are the usual offenders. Re-test XPM after each one to find the culprit.
  5. Check your internet connectionRun a quick speed test and load a couple of other websites. If everything is slow, the issue is your connection or Wi-Fi, not XPM — restart your router or switch to a wired connection and try again.
  6. Sign out and back in, then restartFully sign out of Xero, close the browser, and sign back in — this clears a stale session. If it's still slow, restart the whole computer to free up memory and close background processes.
  7. Check the Xero status pageIf XPM is slow or down for several people in the practice at once, it may be a Xero-side issue rather than your setup. Check the official Xero status page for any reported incidents before troubleshooting further.
If XPM is slow for the whole team, day after day — and it isn't a Xero outage — the cause is more likely your network, older devices or browser policy than any one person's PC. That's the point to bring in your IT provider rather than clearing caches on machine after machine.
APPS THAT JUST WORK

A slow practice tool is a slow practice.

When Xero Practice Manager and your other cloud apps crawl every afternoon, it's usually the browsers, devices or network underneath — and it quietly drains billable time. Our free IT Health Check reviews your whole environment, from connection to devices to the apps your accounting firm runs on, and shows you exactly what to fix so XPM stays fast.
