Xero: "this file
can't be previewed."

You open an attachment on a bill or bank transaction in Xero and instead of the document you get "This file can't be previewed with this browser." It's almost always a browser-side issue, and these steps clear it fast.

Applies to: Xero (any browser) Time: ~5 minutes Level: Anyone
Quick answer

Use an up-to-date Chrome or Edge, then try an Incognito / Private window — that rules out extensions and cache in one go. Still stuck? Just download the file to view it.

WHY IT HAPPENS

The preview lives in your browser.

Xero's in-browser preview needs a current, supported browser, and it can be blocked by ad-block or PDF-viewer extensions, a stale cache, or a pop-up blocker. Because the document is rendered by the browser rather than Xero itself, the fixes below are all things you change on your own machine.

THE FIX

Work through these in order.

  1. Update or switch your browserUpdate your browser to the latest version, or switch to the latest Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge — Xero's preview is most reliable on those.
  2. Try an Incognito / Private windowOpen a private window and try again. Because it disables extensions and ignores cache, this rules out two of the most common causes in one step.
  3. Clear your cache and cookiesIn your browser settings, clear the cached images and files and cookies, then reload Xero and try the file again.
  4. Disable PDF-viewer and ad-block extensionsTurn off PDF-viewer, ad-block and privacy extensions — these frequently hijack or block in-browser document previews.
  5. Allow pop-ups for XeroIn your browser's site settings, allow pop-ups and redirects for Xero, as the preview can open in a new window that a blocker silently stops.
  6. Download the file insteadIf you just need to see the document, use the download option and open it locally — a reliable workaround while you sort out the browser.
  7. Test another browser or deviceOpen the same file on a different browser or computer. If it works there, you've confirmed the problem is browser-side, not the file or Xero.
Not every file previews. Xero only previews certain file types — unusual or unsupported formats may only download rather than preview. That's expected behaviour, not a fault, so if the download opens fine, there's nothing more to fix.
TOOLS THAT JUST WORK

Cloud apps shouldn't fight your browsers.

When Xero, your practice tools or other cloud apps keep throwing browser errors, it usually points to inconsistent browsers, add-ins or device setup across the team. Our free IT Health Check reviews your whole environment and shows you exactly what to standardise so these little errors stop eating your day.
