Quick answer
On the Xero dashboard, look for a "reconnect" or "connection needs attention" message on the bank account. Open the account, choose Manage account → Refresh / Reconnect, and re-enter your bank login and any codes. Many AU feeds use Open Banking, where consent expires roughly every 90 days and simply needs renewing.
BEFORE YOU PANIC
Is it actually broken — or just not due yet?
Most feeds import once a day, often overnight, on the bank's schedule. If only today's transactions are missing, the feed may simply not have run yet. If transactions from several days ago are missing too, the connection needs attention — carry on below.
THE FIX
Reconnect the feed.
- Check the dashboard for a warningOn the Xero dashboard, the bank account panel will show a message if the connection has dropped — usually "reconnect" or "your bank connection needs to be refreshed". That confirms it's a connection issue, not a Xero outage.
- Refresh / reconnect the accountClick the bank account, then the menu (three dots) → Manage account → Refresh / Reconnect. Follow the prompts and re-enter your internet-banking login and any SMS or app verification code.
- Renew Open Banking consentIf your bank uses Open Banking, you'll be redirected to the bank to re-authorise Xero. This consent lapses about every 90 days — renewing it is often all that's needed.
- Check nothing changed at the bankIf you recently changed your internet-banking password, username or MFA, the feed will have broken. Reconnect using the new details.
- Reactivate a cancelled feedGo to Accounting → Bank accounts. If the feed shows as inactive or cancelled, choose Get bank feeds / activate and follow the steps to re-establish it.
- Fill the gap with a statement importOnce reconnected, compare Xero's balance to your real bank balance. If transactions are missing from the outage window, import a statement CSV/OFX for those dates so nothing is skipped.
Seeing duplicates after reconnecting? That usually means a statement import overlapped with the restored feed. Don't delete transactions in a panic — remove the duplicated statement lines (not reconciled entries) for the overlap dates, and reconcile carefully. If the numbers don't line up, check with your bookkeeper or accountant before making changes.
