Quick answer
Start Word in Safe Mode — hold Ctrl while you open it and click Yes when prompted. If Word behaves in Safe Mode, an add-in or a corrupt Normal.dotm template is to blame — disable add-ins and rename the template. If it still hangs in Safe Mode, run a Quick Repair of Office.
WHY IT HAPPENS
It's rarely the document.
When Word freezes or refuses to open, people assume the file is broken — but the file is usually fine. The most common troublemakers are a third-party add-in (PDF tools, e-signing, practice-management plug-ins), a damaged Normal.dotm — the hidden template that holds your default styles and settings — or a Microsoft 365 update that half-installed. Safe Mode is the fastest way to tell them apart, because it loads Word with all of that switched off.
THE FIX
Work through these in order.
- Force-close Word and reopen itIf Word is stuck on "not responding", give it a minute — it may be busy. If nothing changes, open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), find Microsoft Word, click End task, then reopen. A clean restart clears a lot of one-off freezes on its own.
- Start Word in Safe ModeHold the Ctrl key while you double-click the Word icon and keep holding until it asks to start in Safe Mode — click Yes. (Or press Windows key + R, type winword /safe and press Enter.) If Word runs smoothly here, the problem is an add-in or the template, so continue to the next steps.
- Disable your add-insBack in normal Word, go to File → Options → Add-ins. At the bottom next to Manage, choose COM Add-ins and click Go. Untick everything, click OK and restart Word. If it now behaves, switch the add-ins back on one at a time until the culprit reappears — then leave that one off and ask your IT provider about an update.
- Rename the Normal.dotm templateA corrupt Normal template causes Word to hang or crash on launch. Close Word, press Windows key + R, paste %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates and press Enter. Rename Normal.dotm to Normal.old. Reopen Word — it rebuilds a fresh, clean template automatically. (You'll lose custom default styles, but your documents are untouched.)
- Update Microsoft 365, then run a Quick RepairOpen any Office app and go to File → Account → Update Options → Update Now. If Word still misbehaves, close it and go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find Microsoft 365, choose Modify → Quick Repair. This resets Office without touching your files; use Online Repair only if Quick Repair doesn't help.
- Watch out for Protected ViewIf Word opens but freezes only on certain files — usually ones from email or a download — it may be stuck loading Protected View. When the yellow bar appears, click Enable Editing only if you trust the source. If Protected View itself hangs, open File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Protected View and review the tick-boxes with your IT team.
- Restart the whole PCIf several of the above helped a little but Word is still flaky, a full restart clears stuck background processes and half-applied updates. It's the simplest step and surprisingly often the last one you'll need.
If Word keeps falling over across the office — or the same add-in breaks after every update — it points to something at the Microsoft 365 or device-management level rather than one PC. That's the moment to hand it to your IT provider instead of repeating the same fixes machine by machine.
