You double-click a PDF that lives in OneDrive or a SharePoint library and Adobe throws up "The path does not exist. Check the path name and try again." The file is right there — so what's wrong? Nine times out of ten it's simply an online-only file that hasn't downloaded yet.
Right-click the file in File Explorer and choose "Always keep on this device" so it fully downloads, then open it. If it still won't open, update Adobe (Help → Check for updates) and turn off Adobe's Protected Mode.
To save disk space, OneDrive's Files On-Demand feature keeps most cloud files as tiny placeholders — they show in File Explorer but the real content lives in the cloud until you open them. Older versions of Adobe (and some other apps) can't resolve that placeholder path — technically a "reparse point" — so they report the path doesn't exist. Once the file is actually downloaded to the PC, the path becomes real and it opens fine. Very long folder paths and Adobe's Protected Mode can make it worse.
If your team wastes time chasing "path does not exist" errors, missing previews and files that won't download, your OneDrive and SharePoint setup needs a tidy-up. Our free IT Health Check reviews how your business stores and shares files — sync settings, library structure and permissions — and shows you exactly what to fix so documents just open when people click them.
