Quick answer
Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray and read the message — it often names the file that's stuck. Close any open Office files, fix or rename the problem file, then Quit OneDrive from that same menu and reopen it. That clears the jam most of the time.
WHY IT HAPPENS
One file is holding up the queue.
OneDrive syncs files one after another. If it hits one it can't process — a document still open in Word, a file with an invalid character in the name (" * : < > ? / \ |), a path that's too long, or a very large file — it keeps retrying and the whole queue appears frozen. Clear that one file and the rest flow.
THE FIX
Work through these in order.
- Read what OneDrive is telling youClick the OneDrive cloud icon in the bottom-right system tray. It'll show progress and flag any file with an error — that's your prime suspect.
- Close open filesSave and close anything open in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or a PDF viewer. OneDrive can't finish syncing a file that's locked open in an app.
- Fix problem file namesRename any file OneDrive flags that has an unusual character, or shorten very long file/folder names. Deeply nested folders can also push the path past the limit — move the file higher up.
- Pause and resume syncFrom the OneDrive menu, choose Settings → Pause syncing (2 hours), wait a moment, then resume. This often nudges a stalled queue back to life.
- Quit and reopen OneDriveIn the OneDrive menu, click Settings (gear) → Quit OneDrive / Close OneDrive, then relaunch it from the Start menu. This is safe and doesn't delete files.
- Restart the PCA full restart clears any stuck process still holding a file open in the background.
- Check you're not out of spaceConfirm your OneDrive/SharePoint storage isn't full and your local disk has free space. A full quota silently stalls sync.
- Update OneDriveMake sure Windows and the OneDrive app are up to date — an old client is a common cause of persistent sync bugs.
Before a full reset: a OneDrive reset re-syncs from the cloud and, with Files On-Demand on, re-downloads very little. But if you have recent work that only exists on this PC and hasn't uploaded yet, copy it somewhere safe first — or ask your IT provider to handle the reset. If it's a shared SharePoint library that keeps stalling for the whole team, the fix is usually in how that library is structured, not on individual PCs.
