Quick answer
Check that ndOffice is installed and running — look for its icon in the system tray near the clock. Then allow pop-ups for the NetDocuments site in your browser. If the document still won't open, it may be checked out or locked by someone else. Those three cover most cases.
WHY IT HAPPENS
NetDocuments needs a helper to open files.
NetDocuments stores your documents in the browser, but Word, Excel and PDFs actually open in their desktop apps. The bridge between the two is ndOffice — a small program that runs quietly in the background and hands each file to the right app. When a document downloads instead of opening, or nothing happens at all, ndOffice usually isn't running. A browser pop-up blocker, a document that's checked out to someone else, or a stale cached session can all cause the same symptom.
THE FIX
Work through these in order.
- Check ndOffice is runningLook for the ndOffice icon in the system tray (the small icons near the clock, bottom-right). If it isn't there, open it from the Start menu. If ndOffice isn't installed at all, that's why files download instead of opening — your IT provider can install it.
- Allow pop-ups for NetDocumentsNetDocuments often opens a document in a new window or tab. If your browser is blocking pop-ups, the file silently fails to appear. Click the pop-up-blocked icon in the address bar and choose to always allow pop-ups for the NetDocuments site.
- Try opening in the desktop app vs the browserUse the menu on the document (the "…" or right-click) and choose to open in the desktop application. If that works but the default click doesn't, your default open behaviour may be set to preview or download — adjust it in your NetDocuments profile settings, or ask IT to.
- Check whether the document is checked out or lockedIf a colleague has the document checked out, you'll only be able to open a read-only copy — or it may refuse to open for editing. The document list shows a lock or checked-out marker. Ask them to check it back in, or open the read-only version.
- Restart ndOfficeRight-click the ndOffice tray icon and exit it, then reopen it from the Start menu. This clears a stuck session — a common cause when things worked yesterday but not today.
- Clear your browser cache and sign in againAn expired or corrupted session can stop documents launching. Clear the cache for the last hour, close every browser window, reopen and sign back in to NetDocuments.
- Use a supported browserNetDocuments works best in current versions of Chrome or Microsoft Edge. If you're on an old or unusual browser, switch to a supported one and update it to the latest version, then try again.
If it's happening to several people — or documents keep leaving themselves checked out — the fix usually isn't on any single PC. It points to how ndOffice is deployed, your browser policy or the NetDocuments setup across the firm. That's the point to bring in your IT provider rather than fixing machines one at a time.
