ndOffice or Office
integration issues?

The NetDocuments ribbon vanished from Word or Outlook, ndOffice won't file a document, or it keeps asking you to sign in. These are the usual culprits — and the fixes are more straightforward than they look.

Applies to: NetDocuments · ndOffice · Microsoft Office Time: ~10–15 minutes Level: Comfortable user / IT
Quick answer

If the NetDocuments ribbon is missing, go to File → Options → Add-ins, check the Disabled Items list and re-enable it, then confirm the COM Add-ins are ticked. If ndOffice won't file or save documents, sign out of ndOffice and back in to refresh the token. Still stuck? Repair or reinstall ndOffice.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Office and ndOffice have to stay in step.

ndOffice adds a NetDocuments ribbon and buttons to Word, Excel and Outlook so you can open, save and file documents without leaving the app. Two things commonly break that link. First, Office watches every add-in and will automatically disable one that loads slowly or crashes — which makes the ribbon disappear. Second, ndOffice holds a sign-in token that can expire, especially after a password change or MFA reset, and when it does, filing and save-to actions start failing. Both are fixable in a few minutes.

THE FIX

Work through these in order.

  1. Re-enable the add-in from Disabled ItemsIn Word or Outlook, go to File → Options → Add-ins. At the bottom, set the Manage dropdown to Disabled Items and click Go. If NetDocuments is listed, select it and click Enable.
  2. Confirm the COM add-in is tickedBack in the same Add-ins screen, set Manage to COM Add-ins and click Go. Make sure every NetDocuments / ndOffice box is ticked, then click OK. Fully close and reopen the app so the ribbon reloads.
  3. Refresh the ndOffice sign-inOpen ndOffice from the system tray, sign out, then sign back in. This renews the token and fixes most "can't save" or "can't file" errors without touching anything else.
  4. Restart ndOffice and Office togetherExit ndOffice from the tray, close Word, Excel and Outlook completely, then reopen ndOffice first and the Office app second. This clears a half-loaded session where the ribbon appears but doesn't respond.
  5. Repair ndOfficeIn Windows Settings → Installed apps, find ndOffice, choose Modify (or Repair). This re-registers the add-in with Office without removing your setup — the go-to fix when the ribbon keeps dropping out.
  6. Reinstall ndOfficeIf repair doesn't stick, uninstall ndOffice, restart the PC, then reinstall the current version supplied by your IT provider. A clean install clears corrupted files that repair can miss.
  7. Test filing to NetDocumentsOpen a document, make a small change and use the NetDocuments buttons to save and file it back. If it saves cleanly, the integration is healthy again. If it errors here, note the exact message for your IT provider.
If the ribbon keeps disabling itself — or several staff hit the same sign-in loops — the cause is usually deeper than one PC: an Office resiliency setting, a single sign-on quirk, or the way ndOffice is deployed across the firm. Those are best handled with policy and a managed rollout, which is exactly where your IT provider can lock it down for good.
INTEGRATIONS THAT STAY PUT

The NetDocuments ribbon shouldn't keep disappearing.

When ndOffice and Office fall out of step, filing and saving documents turns into a daily battle for fee-earners. Our free IT Health Check reviews how your document management and Office integrations are deployed — add-ins, sign-in, single sign-on and updates — and shows you what to fix so the ribbon stays where it belongs.
