Quick answer
Make sure every PC has HandiSoft fully closed, then run the update setup file as administrator. If it still fails, add the HandiSoft program folder to your antivirus exclusions and re-download the update. On a network install you update the shared program folder once so every workstation ends up on the same version.
WHY IT HAPPENS
It's rarely the software itself.
HandiSoft (now part of The Access Group) installs a shared program and data set that the whole office uses. Updates and launches fail for predictable reasons: the installer needs administrator permission and didn't get it; security software has quarantined or blocked part of the download; the program is still open on another PC and files are locked; or one workstation is on last year's version while another has already updated. Knowing which of these is in play saves a lot of guessing.
THE FIX
Work through these in order.
- Close HandiSoft everywhere firstMake sure the program is shut on every PC in the office, not just yours. Updates touch shared files, and one open copy is enough to lock the process and cause a partial or failed update.
- Run the installer as administratorRight-click the HandiSoft setup or update file and choose Run as administrator. Many "update failed" and "can't write file" messages are simply Windows blocking changes to the program folder without elevated rights. If your login isn't an admin, someone with admin access (or your IT provider) needs to run it.
- Check your antivirus isn't blocking itSecurity software sometimes quarantines part of the download or stops the installer mid-run. Add an exclusion for the HandiSoft program folder (and the data folder), temporarily allow the installer if prompted, then re-download and run the update fresh. Re-check the antivirus quarantine if files went missing.
- Confirm you have the right, complete downloadGrab the current version from the official Access/HandiSoft support page rather than an old saved copy, and make sure the file finished downloading. If you extracted a zip, run the setup.exe from the extracted folder, not from inside the zip.
- Get every PC onto the same versionHandiSoft expects all workstations to match. On a network install, apply the update once against the shared program folder and then launch on each PC so they line up. If versions are mixed, the update can be refused until the odd machine out is corrected.
- Understand network vs local installsIf your data lives on a server or shared drive, the update usually runs against that central program folder — updating one local copy won't fix a mismatch. If you're not sure whether you're network or standalone, check where the data folder points before changing anything.
- Restart and try a clean launchReboot the PC (and the server, out of hours, if it hosts the install), then open HandiSoft again. A restart clears locked files and half-finished update states that quietly block the program from opening.
- Call HandiSoft support with the exact messageIf it still won't open or update, note the precise error text and your version number and contact Access/HandiSoft support on 1800 660 670 — or loop in your IT provider so they can check permissions, the server and the data path in one pass.
Before a big update, back up your data folder. Year-end and version updates change the shared data set. A quick copy of the HandiSoft data folder (to a safe location, not the same drive) means that if an update stalls or corrupts something, you can restore in minutes rather than losing an afternoon. If several staff are hitting the same failure at once, treat it as a server or permissions issue and get IT involved rather than repeating the update on each machine.
